Discover the untouched beauty and authentic ethnic culture of Northern Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is home to some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes and culturally rich communities, yet many of its true treasures remain untouched by mass tourism. The Best of Mai Chau – Pu Luong – Ninh Binh Private Tour (4 Days) is designed for travelers who seek more than just sightseeing. This journey invites you to slow down, step off the beaten path, and immerse yourself in authentic local life amid pristine mountains, terraced rice fields, and tranquil limestone valleys.
Over four carefully curated days, this private tour takes you from the vibrant capital of Hanoi to the peaceful valleys of Mai Chau, the untouched nature reserve of Pu Luong, and finally to the serene wetlands and karst landscapes of Ninh Binh. Along the way, you will encounter Muong and Thai ethnic minorities, stay in local homestays, explore traditional villages, and experience Vietnam’s countryside in its most genuine form.
Less mass tourism
Unlike mainstream destinations packed with crowds, this tour focuses on lesser-known villages and quiet nature reserves. You will walk through small hamlets, cycle along rural dykes, and enjoy landscapes that remain largely unspoiled.
Authentic ethnic culture experience
This is not a staged cultural show. You will meet Muong and Thai families in their own homes, share meals prepared by your hosts, learn about traditional crafts, music, and farming practices, and gain insight into daily life that most travelers never see.
Prime, uncommercialized scenery
From the misty mountain passes of Thung Khe to the emerald rice terraces of Pu Luong and the mirror-like waters of Van Long Nature Reserve, the scenery throughout this journey is raw, peaceful, and profoundly photogenic.

Your journey begins in the morning as your guide and driver meet you in Hanoi for the drive to Mai Chau. The landscape gradually transforms from urban streets to rolling hills and rural villages.
Your first cultural encounter is a visit to a Muong ethnic village, where you learn about traditional stilt houses, agricultural practices, and daily life that has remained unchanged for generations.
Continuing the journey, you stop at Thung Khe Pass, one of the most scenic mountain passes in northern Vietnam. From here, panoramic views stretch across valleys and limestone mountains, offering excellent photo opportunities.
By midday, you arrive in Mai Chau Valley, known for its harmony of rice terraces, green mountains, and White Thai villages. Lunch is served at a homestay in Mai Hich Village, prepared by your local host.
In the afternoon, explore Mai Hich by walking or cycling along quiet village paths. Rice fields, streams, and traditional houses create a peaceful setting where you can interact naturally with friendly locals.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at your homestay. For those interested, a private traditional music and dance performance by local villagers can be arranged, offering insight into ethnic folklore and cultural expressions.
Overnight at a homestay in Mai Hich.
After breakfast, depart Mai Hich for Eo Ken Village, home to the Muong ethnic community. A gentle walk downhill reveals sweeping views of Pu Luong Nature Reserve, with layered rice terraces and distant mountains.
Visit a local Muong family and learn about their daily routines, farming methods, and spiritual beliefs. Continue walking through the countryside, crossing small streams and passing through Ban Hang Village, where rural life unfolds quietly.
After lunch, transfer to Pu Luong Nature Reserve and check into your accommodation nestled in nature. In the afternoon, explore Chieng Lau, a picturesque area famous for its bamboo water wheels. These traditional structures are still used to lift water from streams to irrigate rice fields, showcasing local ingenuity and sustainable living.
A short bamboo rafting experience offers a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. Dinner and overnight in Pu Luong.
Begin the day with an easy hiking route descending into Pu Luong’s beautiful valley. Walk through Chom Uoi and Chom Lan villages, where rice terraces, ponds, and wooden houses create a tranquil rural scene.
The trail leads to Pho Doan Village, a small local hub where you enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant.
In the afternoon, depart for Ninh Binh with a stop at Cam Luong Sacred Fish Stream. This unique site is home to thousands of fish protected by local beliefs and legends, offering a fascinating cultural and natural experience.
Arrive in Ninh Binh later in the day and check into your accommodation. Dinner and overnight in Ninh Binh.
After breakfast, embark on a cycling journey along rural dykes in Thung La, covering approximately 15 kilometers through rice fields, rivers, and limestone formations. The route includes frequent stops for photos and conversations with locals.
Visit Thung La Temple, dating back to the 11th century, where you experience traditional musical instruments connected to Vietnamese spiritual life.
Continue to Van Long Nature Reserve for a sampan boat trip through tranquil wetlands surrounded by towering limestone karsts. This reserve is known for its peaceful atmosphere and wildlife, including rare langur monkeys and water birds.
After the boat trip, visit a local embroidery village, where you join an embroidery workshop guided by an experienced craftswoman. Learn traditional techniques and try your hand at this delicate art.
In the late afternoon, return to Hanoi, passing through the scenic landscapes of the Red River Delta, marking the end of your journey.

These experiences create genuine connections rather than surface-level sightseeing.

The Best of Mai Chau – Pu Luong – Ninh Binh Private Tour (4 Days) is more than a journey through beautiful landscapes. It is an invitation to experience Vietnam as it truly is: warm, authentic, and deeply connected to nature and tradition. From mountain valleys to ethnic villages and serene wetlands, this tour offers memories that last far beyond the trip itself.

Genuinely one of the best travel days of my life
We did the cycling and cooking session as a couple celebrating our anniversary. The guide was warm, the pace was relaxed, and the farmhouse lunch felt completely authentic. Nothing felt staged.

The herbal session at the end was unexpected magic
I booked this mostly for the cycling but the herbal wellness close at the end completely surprised me. Sitting outside with the foot soak after the ride, looking out over the garden — it's the kind of moment you don't plan for.

Private and personal — felt nothing like a group tour
As a Vietnamese-Canadian I was a bit nervous this would feel touristy. It didn't at all. The family we cooked with was genuinely hospitable, the herbs were real, and the guide spoke about the village with obvious pride.

Seamless logistics, beautiful setting
The van pickup was on time, the bikes were in great condition, and every transition between activities felt smooth. My group of four had very different fitness levels and the guide adjusted the pace.

Worth every cent — and then some
I compared four different Hanoi day tours before booking this one. The itinerary description was the most honest and specific I found. What was promised is exactly what was delivered.

Took my parents — best decision of the trip
My parents are in their 60s and I wasn't sure about the cycling. Completely unnecessary worry — the lanes are flat and gentle and the guide made my mom feel completely at ease.
