Tour Overview
Half day private trekking journey through Cat Ba Town - Cat Ba National Park - Cat Ba Town. The route is shaped around clear pacing, trusted local guidance and enough flexibility to adjust hotels, transfers and touring style before quote.
This half day tour explores Cat Ba Island and the quieter, eastern side of Halong Bay — Lan Ha Bay — weaving together Cat Ba National Park and Cat Ba Town. Cat Ba is the largest island of the Halong archipelago and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, balancing emerald sea, towering karsts and the protected forest of Cat Ba National Park.
You travel with a private vehicle and English-speaking guide, so the rhythm stays flexible. Pickup, pace and stops are shaped around your group rather than a rigid coach timetable, and the route favours quieter coves and trails over the busiest tourist spots.
Cat Ba sits roughly 165 km east of Hanoi and is reached by road plus a short ferry crossing. Lan Ha Bay sees a fraction of Halong Bay's traffic but shares the same limestone seascape, with hundreds of small sandy beaches and hidden lagoons. Cat Ba National Park covers about half the island's surface and protects the rare Cat Ba langur — its limestone-jungle trails are an entirely different landscape from the bay. In a single day this route gives you the headline experience of the area without rushing it.
Best suited to travellers who want the seascape and culture of Cat Ba without the Halong Bay crowds — couples, small families, photographers and active travellers. Walking and activity sections are moderate — comfortable shoes and a basic level of fitness are recommended. If you have one day on the island, this is a strong choice.
Cat Ba is reachable from Hanoi in roughly three to four hours by combined road and ferry, depending on traffic. The bay is at its most photogenic from March to early May and again in September and October — outside the rainy summer storms and the cool grey of late winter. Boat activities are weather-dependent and may be modified for safety. From $29 per person, the experience is reconfirmed by date and group size at booking.

Genuinely one of the best travel days of my life
We did the cycling and cooking session as a couple celebrating our anniversary. The guide was warm, the pace was relaxed, and the farmhouse lunch felt completely authentic. Nothing felt staged.

The herbal session at the end was unexpected magic
I booked this mostly for the cycling but the herbal wellness close at the end completely surprised me. Sitting outside with the foot soak after the ride, looking out over the garden — it's the kind of moment you don't plan for.

Private and personal — felt nothing like a group tour
As a Vietnamese-Canadian I was a bit nervous this would feel touristy. It didn't at all. The family we cooked with was genuinely hospitable, the herbs were real, and the guide spoke about the village with obvious pride.

Seamless logistics, beautiful setting
The van pickup was on time, the bikes were in great condition, and every transition between activities felt smooth. My group of four had very different fitness levels and the guide adjusted the pace.

Worth every cent — and then some
I compared four different Hanoi day tours before booking this one. The itinerary description was the most honest and specific I found. What was promised is exactly what was delivered.

Took my parents — best decision of the trip
My parents are in their 60s and I wasn't sure about the cycling. Completely unnecessary worry — the lanes are flat and gentle and the guide made my mom feel completely at ease.
