Instead of crowded tourist hotspots, this journey takes you deep into rural Northern Vietnam, where nature remains pristine and cultural traditions are still part of everyday life.

Your journey begins in the morning as you meet your tour guide and driver in Hanoi. Leaving the city behind, you travel westward toward the mountainous region of Mai Chau.
The first cultural encounter takes place at a Muong village, where you observe daily life and learn about the customs and traditions of this ethnic group. The journey continues to Thung Khe Pass, a breathtaking viewpoint offering sweeping panoramic views over the valley below. This is an ideal stop for photography and a short break to enjoy the fresh mountain air.
By mid-morning, you arrive in Mai Chau Valley, located approximately 145 kilometers from Hanoi. Known for its harmonious landscapes, green mountains, rice paddies, and White Thai villages, Mai Chau offers a peaceful atmosphere far removed from urban life.
You check in at a homestay in Mai Hich Village, where a home-cooked lunch prepared by your host awaits. In the afternoon, you set out on foot to explore the surrounding countryside. Walking along village paths and quiet roads, you pass rice fields, streams, and traditional stilt houses, stopping to chat with friendly locals who often invite visitors in for tea.
The trek continues toward Xam Khoe Village, a lesser-known Thai village that remains largely untouched by tourism. Here, nature and culture blend seamlessly, offering insight into a traditional way of life.
At the end of the day, your driver transfers you back to your accommodation. In the evening, you may choose to enjoy a private traditional music and dance performance by local artists (optional, additional cost), providing a deeper appreciation of ethnic cultural expressions.
Meals included: Lunch and dinner.
After breakfast, you depart Mai Hich for Eo Ken Village, located about 30 kilometers away and home to the Muong ethnic community. Walking downhill, you enjoy spectacular views of Pu Luong Nature Reserve, with its layered rice terraces and dramatic mountain scenery.
In Eo Ken Village, you visit a local Muong family, gaining firsthand insight into their daily routines, traditional houses, and agricultural practices. Continuing on foot, you cross a small stream and walk toward Ban Hang Village, surrounded by lush vegetation and serene landscapes.
After the trek, you return to Mai Chau for lunch before continuing the journey toward Ninh Binh. Along the way, there are opportunities to stop, meet locals, and capture photos of rural life.
You arrive in Ninh Binh in the late afternoon and check in to your accommodation, enjoying a peaceful evening surrounded by nature.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The final day begins with a 15-kilometer cycling tour along a rural dyke. As you pedal through the countryside, you pass rice fields, rivers, limestone mountains, and small villages, with frequent stops for photos and conversations with locals.
Your ride leads to Thung La Temple, dating back to the 11th century. Here, you explore traditional Vietnamese musical instruments closely tied to spiritual practices and cultural heritage.
Next, you head to Van Long Nature Reserve, where you board a traditional sampan boat. Gliding quietly through the wetland and limestone formations, you may spot wildlife such as white monkeys and egrets perched on rocky cliffs.
In the afternoon, you visit a local embroidery village, where you participate in a hands-on embroidery workshop guided by an experienced craftswoman. This activity offers a meaningful connection to Vietnam’s traditional handicrafts and rural artistry.
Later in the day, you say farewell to your hosts and begin the scenic drive back to Hanoi, traveling through the fertile Red River Delta and arriving in the late afternoon.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Genuinely one of the best travel days of my life
We did the cycling and cooking session as a couple celebrating our anniversary. The guide was warm, the pace was relaxed, and the farmhouse lunch felt completely authentic. Nothing felt staged.

The herbal session at the end was unexpected magic
I booked this mostly for the cycling but the herbal wellness close at the end completely surprised me. Sitting outside with the foot soak after the ride, looking out over the garden — it's the kind of moment you don't plan for.

Private and personal — felt nothing like a group tour
As a Vietnamese-Canadian I was a bit nervous this would feel touristy. It didn't at all. The family we cooked with was genuinely hospitable, the herbs were real, and the guide spoke about the village with obvious pride.

Seamless logistics, beautiful setting
The van pickup was on time, the bikes were in great condition, and every transition between activities felt smooth. My group of four had very different fitness levels and the guide adjusted the pace.

Worth every cent — and then some
I compared four different Hanoi day tours before booking this one. The itinerary description was the most honest and specific I found. What was promised is exactly what was delivered.

Took my parents — best decision of the trip
My parents are in their 60s and I wasn't sure about the cycling. Completely unnecessary worry — the lanes are flat and gentle and the guide made my mom feel completely at ease.
