Discovering Hoi An rural by cycling and city walking tour
8:00 AM: Immerse in Hoi An’s town center. Your first stop is Cam Pho, one of the oldest community centers in Hoi An. Built in the shape of a Chinese character, this historic site reflects a rich heritage of religion, trade, and cultural exchange between the local residents and Chinese and Japanese merchants.
Next, enjoy a leisurely walk to the iconic Chua Cau, or Japanese Covered Bridge. Constructed in the 17th century, this bridge was designed to link the Chinese and Japanese quarters of Hoi An. Its original architecture has been meticulously preserved over the centuries, making it a symbol of the town’s historical charm.
Stroll through the town to experience local life firsthand. Visit Quan Thang Ancient House, one of the most authentic examples of Hoi An's traditional architecture. This residence showcases exquisite woodwork and sculptures crafted by master artisans from Kim Bong carpentry village, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a Hoi An family.
Continue your journey to the Phuc Kien or Fujian Assembly Hall, an architectural marvel rich in history. Afterwards, board a boat for a scenic ride across the Thu Bon River to Kim Bong village. Enjoy the refreshing river breeze and picturesque views of the riverbanks as you travel.
Kim Bong is renowned for its wood carving tradition. Originally influenced by northern Vietnamese techniques, local artisans have blended Chinese and Japanese methods to create a unique style. Explore the village by bike, visit a carpenter’s workshop, and see skilled craftsmen at work. You’ll also have the opportunity to purchase handcrafted wood items as mementos.
Cycle further to Tra Nhieu village and immerse yourself in the beauty of Vietnam’s central region. Meet local artisans like Mr. Kha, who makes bamboo baskets, Ms. Duoc, a mat weaver, and Mr. Huynh Ri, a shipbuilder. Enjoy the rural landscape dotted with rice paddies, palm trees, and bustling farm life.
From Tra Nhieu, take a boat ride on the Thu Bon River to Cam Thanh village, admiring the water palm trees and fishing farms along the way. Upon arrival in Cam Thanh, unwind at the home of fisherman Mr. Phong, where you can sip green tea and enjoy a soothing foot massage with healing herbs from his garden.
Next, engage in a cooking class using fresh herbs and vegetables from Tra Que village. Learn to prepare traditional dishes such as grilled fish wrapped in banana leaves, Hoi An spring rolls, shrimp spring rolls, and crispy pancakes. Relish the fruits of your labor as you enjoy the delicious meal you’ve prepared.
In the afternoon, take a serene ride in a small circular bamboo sampan through the tranquil water palm grove, a perfect way to relax after a day of adventure.
Conclude your day with a return to your hotel, reflecting on the diverse experiences and cultural insights gained throughout your journey.
